Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about visiting Pretoria Health — from your first appointment to ongoing mental health care.

About the Practice

Pretoria Health is a private general practice with a focused emphasis on psychiatry and mental health care, located at 155 Soutpansberg Road, Rietondale, Pretoria. The practice is led by Dr Jorine Nel — a GP who graduated with distinctions in both Psychiatry and Family Medicine — providing structured, thorough mental health consultations alongside general medical care.

Dr Nel is a General Practitioner (GP) with a focused interest and strong background in psychiatry. She graduated with a distinction in Psychiatry from the University of Pretoria and has over a decade of experience in mental health care, including five years as a treating physician at an addiction centre. While she is not a registered specialist psychiatrist, her practice is centred on psychiatry-focused GP care — structured assessments, diagnosis, and management of mental health conditions within the scope of a highly experienced general practitioner.

Pretoria Health is located at 155 Soutpansberg Road, Rietondale, Pretoria 0084. Parking is available on-site. The practice is easily accessible from the N1 and N4 and is centrally located relative to most Pretoria suburbs.

The practice is open Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 17:00, and on Saturdays from 08:00 to 12:00. The practice is closed on Sundays and public holidays. Same-day appointments are often available — contact us directly to confirm availability.

Appointments & Bookings

No referral is required. You can book directly with Pretoria Health by phone or through our contact form. Simply get in touch and we will arrange a convenient appointment time for you.

Initial psychiatric assessments typically take 60–90 minutes, allowing Dr Nel sufficient time for a thorough clinical interview, history review, and the development of a treatment plan. ADHD assessments may take up to 90 minutes. Follow-up consultations are generally 30–45 minutes, depending on complexity and what needs to be addressed.

Please bring your identity document or passport, your medical aid card (if applicable), a list of any current medications and dosages, and any relevant previous reports or diagnoses. If you have completed pre-assessment questionnaires sent by the practice, please bring those too. It can also be helpful to write down your main concerns beforehand so that nothing is forgotten during the consultation.

Yes. Please give at least 24 hours' notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. Late cancellations or no-shows may incur an administrative fee, as consultation slots are reserved specifically for you. We understand circumstances change — please contact us as early as possible so that we can offer your slot to another patient in need.

Mental Health Care

Dr Nel provides focused care for a wide range of mental health conditions, including depression and mood disorders, anxiety (generalised, social, panic disorder), ADHD in adults, trauma and PTSD, substance use and addiction-related conditions, sleep disorders, and burnout. Each patient is assessed individually — conditions are not assumed before the evaluation is complete.

Not necessarily. Medication is only recommended when clinically indicated. Dr Nel takes a collaborative approach — all treatment options are discussed with you openly, and decisions are made together. Treatment may include therapy, lifestyle interventions, medication, or a combination. You will never be prescribed medication without a clear explanation of what it is, why it is recommended, and what alternatives exist.

Dr Nel's consultations focus on assessment, diagnosis, and medical management of mental health conditions. While her approach is inherently supportive and involves detailed listening, formal psychotherapy (CBT, DBT, etc.) is not provided in-session. Where therapy is indicated, she will refer you to a clinical psychologist or therapist and can co-manage your care alongside them.

Yes. All consultations are strictly confidential and conducted in full compliance with HPCSA ethical guidelines and POPIA regulations. Information is only shared with your explicit consent — except where there is a legal requirement or a serious risk of harm to yourself or others, in which case disclosure may be legally required. This will always be discussed with you where possible.

Fees & Medical Aid

Most major medical aids are accepted, including Discovery Health, Momentum Health, Bonitas, Medshield, Fedhealth, GEMS, Liberty Medical Scheme, Bestmed, Medihelp, and others. Please confirm your specific scheme and plan at the time of booking. If you are uncertain about your cover, we recommend contacting your medical aid directly before your appointment.

Self-pay patients are warmly welcome at Pretoria Health. Consultation fees are discussed at the time of booking. We accept cash, card (Visa & Mastercard), and EFT. We believe that access to quality mental health care should not be a barrier, and we aim to make fees as clear and manageable as possible.

Yes. Medical certificates are issued where clinically appropriate. Detailed reports for employers, educational institutions, insurers, or other healthcare providers can be prepared at an additional administrative fee. Please let Dr Nel know at the time of your consultation what documentation you require so that adequate time can be allocated.
